The XEO program, now in its fourth cohort and third year, was launched to support diverse leaders in the innovation community on their leadership journey. It’s part of the broader Connect All initiative, which focuses on bridging the gap between underrepresented groups and tech & life science startups. The goal is to create the best innovation ecosystem on the planet, which is an ecosystem that is both inclusive and equitable.
In August, Connect kicked off the Fall 2024 XEO program at the stunning Torrey View, where we practiced networking, goal-setting, and introductions. This first session was filled with enthusiasm, connections, and a shared spirit of growth. Ashley van Zeeland, VP at Illumina and XEO alum, shared her insights and encouragement with the group.
Session 2, hosted at the beautiful campus of Point Loma Nazarene University, consisted of deepening personal connections and exploring strategies for effective networking. XEO alum Matthieu Rouffet shared how the program has influenced his work as Dean of the School of STEM at PLNU.
In Session 3, the cohort dove into global and local innovation with a visit to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. They learned about the groundbreaking research and significant philanthropic contributions of Ellen B. Scripps, which have helped the institution thrive. Carrie Sawyer, CEO and nonprofit founder, led a discussion on the importance of inclusion in the workplace and beyond.
Session 4 took place during Innovation Day, where the cohort explored inclusive leadership qualities and strategies with Dr. Steven Jones, CEO and global thought leader. They also networked with XEO alumni and got to experience all Innovation Day had to offer.
In Session 5, the group tackled topics like fear, imposter syndrome, and success through an adventurous rock climbing experience with Cairn Leadership. They discussed how facing fears in the great outdoors relates to workplace confidence, success, and overcoming failure.
For Session 6, which will take place tomorrow, the cohort will continue to refine their leadership skills at Eli Lilly, focusing on global innovation and diversity.
Over the past few months, this group has created meaningful connections, often extending the sessions into local happy hours. The XEO program is not just about leadership—it’s about building a community of support. Members learn to relate to one another, celebrate each other’s achievements, and leverage their unique strengths.
