Chilldyne is a technology that enables water to be used for direct-to-chip cooling of CPUs in high performance computers and servers.
Meet Chilldyne
Why is your company the best option to solve the problem you're solving?
Chilldyne was formed by Flometrics who has world-class capabilities in terms of solving thermodynamic and fluid-flow problems. Flometrics has a 25-year track record of developing valuable IP in this space including a medical ventilator for Philips, an excimer laser for Cymer, a touchless duster for SC Johnson and a robotic IED excavator for the US Army. Our engineering talent and experience has guided the development of our robust liquid cooling system, and that is why our customers come back for more.
What nuggets of info make you interesting? Why do people care about what you're doing?
We have designed rocket cooling systems and launched liquid fueled rockets, so cooling supercomputers is easy. We had a demo at supercomputer trade shows where anyone can cut a ½ inch cooling line with a Viking war axe. Recently three engineers from Sandia National Labs did this before they ordered their cooling system from us.
What else do you want us to know?
We have the best technology for data center liquid cooling. We also have the best ratio of revenue to investment of any liquid cooling company. Since founding Chilldyne we've generated $4.1M in revenue and had EBITDA of ($1.3M), so we've had total spend of $5.4M to sell, manufacture and support our $4.1M in revenue while developing our technology. One of our competitors, Asetek, has published financials showing they spent $69M to generate $21M of Data Center revenue in the last eight years. Our big sale in 2019 was to a national lab who had experienced leaks in their Asetek system and selected us as their liquid cooling provider of choice. Their initial system has been live for six months and they just committed to buy a second, more powerful supercomputer cluster that will again depend on our liquid cooling.
BEHIND THE COMPANY
CEO/Founder: Bob Spears

What one book, podcast, newsletter, etc. do you recommend to other entrepreneurs? Why?
The Prince by Machiavelli.
What is your company's secret sauce?
We have patents on the design of our Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU), and we have advanced software that controls the CDU, deals with component failures, and alerts the operator to incipient problems. No one else comes close to our level of expertise and experience in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
What inspired you to start/run this company?
We hope that our liquid cooling system will eliminate 50 million tons of carbon generated by running air conditioners for computers that don't sweat.
What's the best entrepreneurial advice you've received?
CTO and Founder Steve Harrington was told "Make a big CDU that can supply a lot of servers" by Dean Nelson, Ebay and Giri Chukapilli, Nvidia
What sets your company culture apart?
We have a culture that rewards innovation and allows for employees to have as much freedom as possible. Although we are transitioning to selling and manufacturing products, our roots are in high tech engineering services. Our customers appreciate our honest and transparent approach to installation, service and support.
