Welcome To The Cool Companies Spotlight: CRISPR QC

The Class of 2022 Cool Companies is absolutely stellar and we are excited to share them with you. This spotlight series provides the opportunity to learn more about each company from their founders, CEO’s, or Presidents. We will provide you a glimpse into the incredible innovation and talent being cultivated in San Diego.

The second spotlight in the series is dedicated to CRISPR QC.

CRISPR QC

The Nobel prize winning technology of CRISPR is being turned into a therapy to actually cure genetic and other difficult diseases. While incredible, CRISPR also has the potential to create mutations that introduce disease. CRISPR QC is the only company that can interrogate the gene editing process in real time and help companies optimize their CRISPR-based gene therapy to the patient level.

We made some great connections we otherwise would not have made, particularly with investors I normally wouldn’t reach out to but happened to be interested in our space.

Why is your company the best solution to the problem you're solving?

We are a Powered by Cardea company; using the unique BPU platform licensed from Cardea. This is the only technology that can see the interaction of genomic and proteomic material, providing unique insight to improve editing outcomes.

What's the best entrepreneurial advice you've received?

Too much funding is a risk; it hides problems and raises the bar for your investors to make money. Raising the right amount of money and building as much value as you can is the best approach.

What else should we know?

CRISPR QC has the opportunity to set the standards by which gene therapy becomes a reality. Standards and quality control build trust in new science and is the key to translating science to a solution that really benefits people. CRISPR QC will make it so that genetic disease can be cured, and we hope San Diegans are proud of what we accomplish here and seek to join us on our mission.

What is the hardest thing about being an entrepreneur?

It’s a difficult role that most people cannot relate to. You have to give us much time and empathy as possible to your team, your investors and your customers, but few will ever be able to return the same to you and the challenges that you face. Big shoulders and strong feet are necessary; you have to be there for everyone and few can really be there for you.

If you could be any superhero which would it be and why?

Definitely Captain America. Even before he became Captain America, Steve Rogers had the two best superpowers: he always kept the moral high ground and he never, ever gave up even when outmatched.

Where would we find you out and about in San Diego?

Outside of work, I’m out in the hiking trails, outside in San Diego’s amazing sites with my family, or doing historical reenactment.
