DermTech is a molecular diagnostics company preparing to commercialize MelDTect™, a novel non-invasive diagnostic assay for melanoma detection. The company will provide the test under a CLIA/CAP certified molecular testing lab. The company’s technology utilizes a custom tape strip to harvest cells from the surface of melanocytic lesions (moles) and a molecular laboratory developed assay that identifies RNA expression consistent with the presence of melanoma. In a series of studies on over 450 prospectively collected samples, the assay has demonstrated sensitivities exceeding 98% and a specificities exceeding 80%, yielding negative predictive values that exceed 99.5%. This compares much more favorably to existing clinical methods that have sensitivities of 80-90% with specificities of 10-30%. The company is seeking a $10M Series B to complete the commercial validation of its assay, achieve the necessary laboratory accreditation and begin commercial launch.
